Description

Many organizations want to become more sustainable but end up with a scattered list of green ideas and no shared way to decide which ones matter. The Natural Step framework solves that. Built on scientific principles about how our society affects nature and people, it gives teams a common language and a clear test for decisions: does this move us toward sustainability or away from it?

This half-day workshop introduces the framework in plain terms and puts it to work on your own operations. It was the backbone of the original Sustainable Fox Valley initiative’s work with local businesses, and it remains one of the most practical ways to start. Read our overview of The Natural Step for background.

Who it is for

  • Small and mid-sized businesses in the Fox Cities that want to cut costs, reduce risk and strengthen their reputation.
  • Nonprofits, congregations, schools and community organizations aligning operations with their values.
  • Green teams, leadership teams and cross-department groups who need to get on the same page.
  • Organizations that have tried sustainability efforts before and want a more strategic approach.

What is included

  • A 45-minute planning call with your team lead to understand your organization, goals and any current initiatives.
  • A half-day facilitated workshop of about 3.5 hours with a short break, for up to 20 participants.
  • An introduction to the four system conditions and how they translate into everyday business decisions.
  • A guided backcasting exercise: your team describes what a sustainable version of your organization looks like, then works backward to first steps.
  • A prioritization activity that sorts ideas by impact, cost and ease, using the triple bottom line.
  • Participant handouts (printed for on-site sessions, PDF for online sessions).
  • A written summary of the session and your team’s draft action list, delivered within 5 business days.

How it works

  1. Book online. Purchase the workshop and note your organization’s name in the order.
  2. We email you to schedule. Within 2 business days we will reach out to set a date and arrange the planning call.
  3. Plan together. On the call we tailor examples and exercises to your sector, size and goals, and confirm logistics such as room setup or video platform.
  4. Run the workshop. Participants learn the framework, then apply it to your real operations: energy, materials, purchasing, transportation, facilities and community relationships.
  5. Follow through. You receive a written summary and action list your team can take into planning, budgeting and future meetings.

What you get afterwards

Teams leave with three things: a shared understanding of what sustainability means for your organization, a short list of prioritized actions with suggested owners, and a simple way to test future decisions against the four system conditions. Typical first actions include energy and lighting improvements, waste and purchasing changes, and ways to involve employees or members. Some of these steps can pay for themselves through lower operating costs while building momentum for longer-term goals.

If you would like to go further, we can help you set up follow-up sessions or a study circle series for staff. Our article on the triple bottom line in practice is a good next read.

Tip: Mix participants from different departments and levels. The best ideas often come from the people closest to day-to-day operations, such as facilities, purchasing and front-line staff.

Scheduling and delivery

Workshops are delivered in person in the Fox Cities area or online by video call. After purchase, we email you within 2 business days to schedule. On-site sessions need a room with tables, a screen or wall for projection and space for small-group work. For groups larger than 20 or multi-session programs, contact us before booking. See our refund policy for rescheduling and cancellation terms.
